Learning at Uluwatu School

Our Learning Approach at Uluwatu School

At Uluwatu School, we believe children learn best when they feel confident, cared for, and inspired. Our learning programmes are intentionally designed to combine trusted international frameworks with wellbeing, creativity, and a deep connection to our natural surroundings. Everything we do supports your child’s growth — academically, emotionally, and socially.

Our curriculum is evolving and dynamic, shaped to meet the needs of each learner and our unique environment. It is built around two interconnected pillars: Fundamentals and Explorations.

Fundamentals provide a strong foundation in essential knowledge, understanding, and practical application. Explorations build on this foundation by developing transferable skills through the arts, sciences, and ocean literacy, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and real-world learning.

Together, these aspects ensure that children gain both strong academic foundations and the confidence to explore, question, and create.

Language Arts (Fundamental)

Our Language Arts programme is inspired by the UK Primary Literacy Curriculum, giving children a strong and internationally recognised foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Beyond technical skills, we place great importance on self-expression and communication. Through engaging stories, meaningful discussions, and purposeful writing, learners develop confidence in using language and a genuine love of literacy. These skills empower them to share their ideas clearly — both in and beyond the classroom.

Number Enquiry (Fundamental)

Our mathematics programme is grounded in the Common Core framework, which emphasises deep understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving rather than rote memorisation.

This is complemented by Mindset Mathematics, which promotes positive learning habits and joyful engagement with numbers. Children are encouraged to explore concepts, ask questions, and learn from challenges. This approach builds confidence, resilience, and a healthy relationship with mathematics.

Social Emotional Ethical Learning (Fundamental)

Your child’s wellbeing is central to our learning community. Our educators are trained in the SEE Learning (Social, Emotional & Ethical Learning) framework, supporting children to understand their emotions, develop empathy, and build resilience.

These skills are woven into daily school life. Through reflection, movement, and whole-body awareness, children learn to regulate their emotions, improve focus, and feel grounded. This nurturing environment helps them form strong relationships, navigate challenges, and feel safe, supported, and valued.

Ocean Literacy

At Uluwatu School, the ocean is an active teacher. It inspires curiosity, respect, and care, and anchors our learning in real-world relevance. Guided by the UN Ocean Literacy Principles, our environmental learning supports students to understand the ocean’s vital role in sustaining life and to recognise their own responsibility in protecting it.

Through hands-on experiences, inquiry-driven projects, and themed learning, we nurture young ocean lovers, advocates, and environmental stewards. Our learners are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and values to care for their world — now and into the future.

Learner-Educator Ratio

.At Uluwatu School, we prioritize close, personalized attention to support the growth and well-being of every learner. Our low learner–educator ratio enables educators to deeply understand each learner’s strengths, interests, and learning styles, allowing for responsive teaching and individualized support. Through strong educator–learner relationships, we foster a sense of belonging, confidence, and engagement—creating an environment where learners feel known, supported, and empowered to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

How will they learn?

  • Active Enquiry

Learners are actively involved in the process of thinking, discussing, investigating and creating. Problem-based and case-based enquiry actively engages learners to explore and ask questions to acquire new knowledge.
  • Growth Mindset

Our holistic learning approach considers who the learners are, their beliefs, attitudes and experiences. We are process focused with engagement and effort being key to knowledge building. Reflection is a key tool to support future knowledge and ability growth. When students see their growth and understand their journey, it can be a source of joy and pride
  • Place Based learning

Our grounding in place and space is an instrumental part of our teaching pedagogy, it is an anytime, anywhere learning that leverages the power of place in which students gain agency and connections to their community. It aligns a knowledge of local ecosystems providing an environmental and cultural consciousness.
  • Joy Seekers

We focus on creating joyful learning environments that enhance learners’ enthusiasm and foster deeper understanding. This includes creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel safe and valued.
  • Experiential Learning

Learners develop knowledge and skills from direct experience. This relates to project based learning in which learners actively engage in real world and meaningful projects.
