Ocean Literacy & Environmental Learning
Informed by the UN Ocean Literacy Principles https://oceanliteracy.unesco.org/principles/ Uluwatu School is proud to be accredited by the UN Blue Thread Initiative, recognising our mission to educate with, about, and for the ocean. Located near the coastline of the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu School uses its environment to support ocean literacy and environmental learning. Living beside the ocean is both a privilege and a responsibility we share with our learners. From our Bukit campus, the ocean is ever-present — visible on the horizon, shaping our coastline, and defining life on the island of Bali within the wider Indonesian archipelago. Here, the ocean both separates and connects us, reminding us of our deep relationship with the natural world.
At Uluwatu School, the ocean is an active teacher. It inspires curiosity, respect, and care, and anchors our learning in real-world relevance. Guided by the UN Ocean Literacy Principles, our environmental learning supports students to understand the ocean’s vital role in sustaining life and to recognise their own responsibility in protecting it. Through hands-on experiences, inquiry-driven projects, and themed learning, we nurture young ocean lovers, advocates, and environmental stewards. Our learners are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and values to care for their world — now and into the future.
We aspire to continually deepen and expand our Ocean Literacy Curriculum, contributing to wider ocean education efforts and creating meaningful opportunities for outreach, collaboration, and stewardship within our local and global communities.
